Marinship Development was selected as the excavation and shoring subcontractor for Caltrain’s Central Equipment and Maintenance Facility Improvements (CEMOF) project. Not only does this building provide storage, it also represents the heart of Caltrain, serving as a hub for engineers and staff to conduct equipment inspections and maintenance.
In addition to patching the parking lot and paving surfaces adjacent to the railroad tracks, Marinship provided trucking and off-haul of excavated soil, including foundations contaminated by hazardous materials. Concrete trucks accessed the worksite from Stockton Street and Lenzen Avenue. Excavated dirt was stored on-site and sheet pile installation was used to support the excavation during construction. A new permanent storage structure was constructed in the current CEMOF parking lot to expand storage capacity.
Originally constructed in 2007, the CEMOF building underwent upgrades to accommodate a new electric fleet, as part of Caltrain’s $2.44 Billion Electrification Project. According to Caltrain, the Modernization Program (CalMod) aims to reduce the system’s reliance on diesel as well as upgrade performance and reliability.
